FOX POWER SUPPLY
The Fox board Power Supply (FPS) is a
compact switching power supply designed to provide a regulated 5 volt needed by
the
FOX Board and its USB connected peripherals to operate properly. It can be
used also to power additional electronic circuits through its +5 Volts auxiliary
output pads.

FPS accepts an input voltage range from 12 to 24 volt DC (Direct
Current) or AC (Alternate Current) with a continuous output current of 1.5
Ampere. It is based around the National LM2596S Simple Switcher. The LM2596 has
an efficiency of 80% with a 12 Volt DC input.
The FPS accepts both AC and DC inputs with no regards to the
polarity of the input cable, having inside a diode bridge that is used to
rectify the input voltage, so it is not possible to have problems caused from
improper cabling of the external adapter (not included). The minimum DC input is
8 Volts with a reduced maximum output current of 1 Ampere (the Fox Board alone
consumes 0.28 Ampere). It is possible to reach a continuous current of 2 Ampere
with a DC input of minimum 15 Volts.

Looking at the schematic diagram of the FPS you can see after
the diode bridge a SMBJ33A voltage transient suppressor of 600Watt capacity that
is able to suppress overvoltages coming from the external adapter, offering a
good protection for the Fox Board against surges on power lines.
Tha Pads J2 and J4 have to be connected to J2 of the Fox Board
through the included 16 cm. cable. Another auxiliary +5Volts output is available
through pads J3 and J5.
It is present an optional soft switch function through the
pads for J7. The resistor R2 of 0 Ohm is maintaining the voltage on pin 5 of the
LM2596 to the ground maintaining the FPS always in the on state. Removing this
R2 resistor and mounting an R1 resistor of 47 kOHm enables the soft shutdown. In
this case a short circuit on J7 switches on the FPS. Leaving open the two
terminals of J7 results in shutting down the FPS itself. So, with the
modification described you can connect a mechanical switch to J7 to switch the
FPS on and off or you can control the J7 pin 1 with an open collector external
circuit to control the power on or off of the Fox Board through the FPS.
